Generative Pre-trained Transformer(GPT)

GPT

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, a type of artificial intelligence model designed to understand and generate human-like text.

GPT models are trained on large amounts of text data and use the Transformer architecture to predict and generate sequences of words or tokens.

They are commonly used for writing, summarization, question answering, coding, translation, classification, and other language-based tasks.

Also known as: Generative Pre-trained Transformer, GPT model, generative language model.

What Does GPT Mean?

The name GPT describes three important characteristics of the model:

  • Generative: It can create new text based on an input or prompt.
  • Pre-trained: It is first trained on large datasets before being adapted or prompted for specific tasks.
  • Transformer: It uses the Transformer neural network architecture to process relationships between tokens.

Together, these capabilities allow GPT models to perform many language tasks without requiring a separate model for each one.

How Does GPT Work?

A GPT model processes text as smaller units called tokens.

A simplified workflow looks like this:

  1. Input text is converted into tokens.
  2. Tokens are represented numerically.
  3. Transformer layers analyze relationships between the tokens.
  4. The model estimates probabilities for possible next tokens.
  5. One token is selected.
  6. The process repeats to generate a longer response.

For example, given:

The capital of France is

the model may assign a high probability to:

Paris

GPT generates text by repeatedly predicting likely next tokens based on the context it has already received.
