HTTP Request

HTTP Request

An HTTP request is a message sent by a client to a server to request data or perform an action.

Browsers, APIs, mobile apps, and automated tools all use HTTP requests to communicate with web servers.

How Does an HTTP Request Work?

A typical request process looks like this:

  1. The client sends a request to a server.
  2. The request includes a method, target, and headers.
  3. It may also include a request body.
  4. The server processes the request.
  5. The server returns an HTTP response.

Main Parts of an HTTP Request

An HTTP request usually contains:

  • Method: Defines the requested action.
  • Path: Identifies the target resource.
  • Headers: Provide metadata about the request.
  • Query parameters: Add optional request values.
  • Body: Sends additional data when needed.

For example:

GET /products/1001 HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com
Accept: application/json

HTTP Request Methods

Common request methods include:

  • GET — retrieve data
  • POST — send or create data
  • PUT — replace a resource
  • PATCH — update part of a resource
  • DELETE — remove a resource

The method tells the server what the client wants to do.
